We live in the year 2020, yet there are still people who confuse momentary sadness with depression. Or vice versa.

It is natural for us to feel sad and disheartened when something terrible happens. But if this feeling is persistent, it might be an indication of depression.

Almost 6.7% of American adults either have depression or deal with at least one major depressive episode in a year. Even though so many people suffer from it, depression is still stigmatized. 

Hence, it is important to raise as much awareness against it as we can. For that reason, in this blog, we will be discussing the various hidden signs a person dealing with depression portrays.

#1 Feeling Of Helplessness

This is a prevalent sign of depression. People dealing with this problem can consistently find themselves thinking that they are useless or nothing in life is worth it. 

Some other feelings might include self-hatred and unnecessary guilt.

#2 Insomnia Or Too Much Sleep

Depression often comes with fatigue. You may feel like you are always tired and find yourself unable to do anything. 

This can lead to either of these two problems – 

  • Insomnia: The feeling of constant restlessness can drive away your ability to have a good night’s sleep.
  • Sleeping way too much: Since you feel tired all the time, you would also naturally want to sleep all the time.

#3 Overwhelming Emotions

Don’t you sometimes feel like what is happening inside my head?

Even when the surrounding around you are entirely normal, you may go through a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you are crying, and the next minute you are jumping up and down from joy! All of this is a massive sign of depression.

#4 Change In Appetite

Dietary and weight changes are expected in depression. Some people may feel the need to eat a lot and gain weight, while some may go on an unintentional fast. It depends from person to person and doesn’t rely on the type of depression they are dealing with.

#5 Losing Interest

A person suffering from depression often feels like doing nothing. Even the things he/she once could spend their entire lives doing! 

#6 Anxiety 

Anxiety and depression work as a team. In contrast, there is no scientific explanation of why these two usually occur together.

Symptoms of Anxiety include – 

  • Nervousness
  • Constant fear and dreadfulness
  • Increased heart rate and breathing
  • Low attention and concentration span
  • Muscle twitching

Our mental health is precious. There is no shame in admitting that you are dealing with depression. You are not in this alone. Always remember that! Accepting the problem is, in fact, the very first step towards recovery!
