Diet changes that can help us keep our lungs safe and healthy

The respiratory care week has begun! 

On this occasion, let us all learn a little bit more about our lungs and how we can keep them healthy by bringing minute changes in our diets and lifestyle!

Why is Lung Health Important?

Lungs are naturally an integral part of our bodies. But sometimes, we expose them to many dangers without even realizing it.

Every day, we are exposed to millions of chemicals and second-hand smoke. Such chemicals and smoke can harm the health of our lungs.

By inhaling pollutants such as tar and carbon monoxide, we risk our lungs to many infections and chronic diseases such as:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Our body has a natural defense system that works 24×7 and keeps us as safe as possible. But sometimes, even that system needs a little kickstart.

To keep your body healthy and functioning, we must eat a nutritious and balanced diet. If you are someone with lung problems, eating well should be of top priority for you. There are plenty of nutrients in our food that help us fight against infections.

Foods That Help Keep Our Lungs Healthy –


The vitamins and minerals present in fruits help us fight against several chest infections. Vitamin C and E, along with beta-carotene present in apples, ensure the lungs’ right functioning. They are also filled with antioxidants that boost our immune system.



Berries are also loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C. These two help in the regeneration of damaged cells in our lungs. Acai and Blueberries are the most helpful.



If someone is suffering from inflammatory diseases such as asthma, omega-3 fatty acids can work like magic. Walnuts are loaded with these healthy fatty acids. Eating a handful of walnuts daily can be very useful.


Cayenne Pepper

Elements such as capsaicin present in cayenne pepper have many beneficial effects on our lungs. They help protect the mucus lining present on our lungs and increase the secretion of other essential nutrients.

 Broccoli is filled with components such as carotenoids, vitamin C, and folate. These elements fight against the damaging cells in our lungs. Another nutrient called L-sulforaphane present in broccoli tricks the cells in our lungs to switch on their anti-inflammatory function. This protects us from diseases such as asthma.


Ginger & Garlic

Ginger is also loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It flushes out pollutants from our lungs. Ginger also helps remove congestion and restores flow in our lungs.

Garlic contains flavonoids which generate glutathione, which helps upgrade the disposal of toxins and cancer-causing agents, further helping your lungs to work better.
